What is Hatha Yoga?

 

Hatha Yoga is widely shown to be a gentle and safe way to relieve stress, increase flexibility and suppleness, and improve general health.  It is an excellent way of restoring balance to our bodies and minds in this increasingly busy world.  We achieve this by practising physical postures, as well as breathing and relaxation techniques.

 

Physical postures: are a series of specially designed positions called asanas.  These asanas flex, stretch or compress every part of the body.  This keeps all the muscles and joints supple, and applies a gentle massage to the internal organs.

 

Breathing: by changing the rate and depth of the breath, we find that we gain greater control over emotions and behaviour.

 

Relaxation: sounds easy but many people find it difficult to achieve.  The yoga relaxation techniques are simple, and easily incorporated into everyday life.  Elements of meditation are often also incorporated in this practice.

 

All my classes at Whickham Community Centre are suitable for beginners and improvers.  It you have any health concerns please get in touch beforehand so we can discuss the most appropriate class.

British Wheel of Yoga is recognised by the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) and Sport England as the national governing body for yoga.  The organisation runs three-year teaching diploma courses and requires proof of continuing professional development to maintain membership.
